LEARN ABOUT COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS:
A "Check Engine" light on a vehicle’s dashboard is an alert from the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics system (OBD-II) that signals a potential issue with the engine or related components. It can mean anything from a loose gas cap to more complex engine problems.
When the light comes on, the vehicle’s computer has detected an error in one or more systems and has stored a “trouble code” in its memory. This code can be read using a scan tool to help identify the issue. Common causes of a check engine light include:
- Loose or damaged gas cap
- Malfunctioning oxygen sensor
- Catalytic converter issues
- Faulty spark plugs or ignition coils
- Issues in the mass airflow sensor
- And more.
The light may either be steady or flashing, with a flashing light generally indicating a more serious issue. Ignoring a check engine light, especially a flashing one, can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, increased emissions, or even engine damage over time.
Simply pulling codes does not tell you the problem.
For instance, a P0300 code is a common misfire code. This can be caused by a combination of the following:
- Spark Plugs
- Ignition Wires
- Ignition Coil
- Valve Springs
- Valves
- Fuel Pump
- Fuel Injector
- Engine Wiring Harness
- ECM
- Head Gasket
- Mass Air Flow Sensor
- Intake leaks
- Turbo Issues
- And More!
That's why diagnostic testing is so important! Properly diagnosing the cause requires specialty testing equipment (much more than just a scan tool) as well as years of professional experience. Give us call to get your problem professionally diagnosed.
